FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Not a penny. Digital Deadwood is totally free for you - the end user. So how does the site support itself? Development was funded in part by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission. Ongoing maintenance and development is funded by our partners. Deadwood businesses pay an ongoing fee to become a Digital Deadwood partner, which means their building's interior is represented in the environment. If you're a Deadwood-based business interested in becoming a partner, visit our partnerships page by clicking the link above or by clicking here.

Q: I can sign up for an account, but I after I click the "Save Profile and Play" button all I get is a white screen. What's wrong?
A: First off, make sure that your browser is current! We only support Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer Download, Netscape Navigator 7.1 Netscape Navigator Download, Mozilla 1.5 Mozilla Download, Firefox 0.8 Firefox Download , Opera 7.23Opera Download or newer browsers, which can all be downloaded for free by clicking the icons above. Also, if you connect to the Internet with a modem, please be patient. There are a lot of files to download when you first visit. If you wait 3-5 minutes and you still don't get anything, contact us at info@digitaldeadwood.com and let us know what platform, processor, operating system, Internet connection and browser you are using.

Q: Okay, I'm logged in and I can see the buildings on Main Street and my avatar. Now what?
A: Click on the street to walk around. When you move your mouse over a doorway, it will be highlighted yellow. Click on it to get historic information about that building, and in some cases, enter it. To move up or down the street, click on one of the four colors, each labeled with a direction, that border the screen. North and south move you up and down the street, while east and west will take you down a side street (if available). You can also use the MAP button (on the compass icon at the bottom of your screen) to warp to any location in Digital Deadwood.

Q: How do I get to the other side of the street? Is that what the FLIP button is for?
A: Yes! The compass icon in the lower-middle part of the screen has two parts. The top part is the MAP button, which will bring up the map window and allow you to warp anywhere in Digital Deadwood - including the other side of the street. However, the lower part of the compass is the FLIP button, which will flip your angle and make the other side of the street visible. Just click it to see the buildings across from you.

Q: Where is everyone?
A: There are more than 900 registered Digital Deadwood users to chat with. Right now, you're most likely to see them in the Silverado Casino (where the only slot machine and blackjack games are), and probably after 3 PM Mountain Daylight Time. If you don't see anyone around when you log on, just wait a few minutes - someone is bound to show up! In the meantime, you can interact with some of the NPCs (non-player characters) scattered throughout town. Try talking to Potato Creek Johnny, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Silver A. Doe or the Bartender.

Q: How do I get inside the buildings?
A: For the moment, you can only enter the Silverado Gaming Establishment, the Old Style Saloon #10 and an abandoned building on lower Main Street; simply click the yellow box that appears when you move the mouse over the doorway or walk over the "Go Inside" icon in front of the door. Other Deadwood establishments will soon follow. We'll be sure to post new Digital Deadwood partners on our news page to keep you up-to-date.

Q: My computer keeps freezing up. Is this a problem with your site or my computer?
A: We've been testing Digital Deadwood on upwards of a dozen different platform/browser configurations, and none of them consistently lock up. If Digital Deadwood isn't the only site or program that crashes your computer, it could be that your system is cluttered with startup programs (virus scanners, system utilities, file-sharing programs and the like) that hog memory. A hard drive too full of music, image, and video files can also cause your system to become unstable. If this doesn't apply to you and you're still having problems, contact us at info@digitaldeadwood.com and let us know what platform, processor, operating system, Internet connection and browser you are using.
